Course Outline: BTEC is a 2 year vocational qualification that prepares young people for future careers in the sports and leisure sector. The course is directly related to the real, everyday world and covers topics such as The Body, Health & Safety, Injury, Practical Sport, Participation in Sport, Planning and Leading Sports Activities and the Sports Industry. There are no examinations and all work is assessed via the production of a portfolio project which is continuously assessed throughout the course. BTEC qualifications are recognised by employers and educational institutions. BTEC also provides a good progression route to more advanced qualifications e.g. BTEC Nationals. There is a much smaller practical component to BTEC than GCSE, so the majority of the lessons will be classroom based. You will also gain a Sports Leadership and a First Aid qualification.
Assessment to gain the BTEC is based on completion of 3 units. Each unit requires you to produce a coursework style portfolio covering all the required topics within the unit. There are NO EXAMS but a much lower practical content (only 2 activities).
Target Level: Students who enjoy PE, but are not as strong practically in a range of sports, would be suited to BTEC Sport. It will also suit students who do not enjoy exams and work best at projects and coursework.
Level of Award: Level 2 BTEC from Edexcel. This qualification is worth 4 GCSE's at grades A*-C
