Course Outline: There are 3 pathways offered by English:
Those students achieving very high levels in English in Key Stage 3 will follow an accelerated route, gaining GCSE Language at the end of Year 10, GCSE English Literature in Year 11, and experiencing some Post-16 taster courses.
The majority of the remaining students will study English for 3 years and will gain a Language and Literature GCSE at the end of Year 11.
Students who achieve low English levels in Key Stage 3 will follow a Foundation English course in Year 9, embedding their literacy skills, before completing GCSE English Language by the end of Year 11.
Target Level: Students gaining level 7 are likely to be offered the accelerated English course, whilst those students at level 4, or below, are likely follow the Foundation course in Year 9.
Level of Award: Up to 2 GCSEs in English Language and Literature awarded by the Welsh Exam Board.
End of Course Target: To access IB English - Grade A or A*in English Language and Literature. To access A Level English- at least a grade C in English Language and preferably English Literature. To access the AS Critical Thinking course- at least grade C in English Literature.
