the last section of the path was rocky and slippy but everyone managed to clamber up. it was lighter and the sun was warming us up. everyone made it to the summit with smiles on their faces dispite some struggling with altitude sickness. lots of pictures were taken o remember the few minutes we were there but im sure the feeling of pride and achievement will stay with us all forever.
after 15 minutes we began the long walk down.
we were all greatful we did parts of he climb in the dark because with the daylight it looked so much more daughting, with cliff edges and steep rocky paths.
we made it down to saddle hut at around 12.30 and had time to rest untill 2. we had some food then made our way down to mirikamba camp for our last night on meru. everyone was shattered and not looking forward to another 3 hours walk down but everyone managed it.
summit day
12.30 wake up with porrige, hot drinks, popcorn and biscuits for breakfast. we set off at around1.30. it was cold but everyone had about 5 layers on to keep us warm. we arrive at rhino point aprox 3800m. we had a short break for toilet and food. we then set off again with our head torches lighting the way.everyone was doing great!
the sky looked amazing in the perfect darkness the stars look so bright and pretty, people were spotting shooting stars every other second. the affects of little sleep and altitute were starting to set in with a few people but everyone slogged on up the rocky paths. oscar our guide promised a tea break about an hour before the summit to warm us up so everyone was looking forward to that. the veiw was amazing with the snu starting to rise behind kili the sky was pink and just looked beautiful. we stopped for tea and biscuits in a sheltered stop.
Monday 2nd August
Today was the second day of our climb up mount meru. Everyone enjoyed a good nights sleep and had to have their bags packed by 7am. Breakfast was served at 7:10, lots of porrige, orange and papaya followed by bread, egg and sausage. We are all really impressed by the food as there is so much of it and it is really tasty.
We left Miriakamba Hut at 8:10, visibility was poor again this morning and it was quite cold but pretty soon everyone warmed up from walking. The vegetation is so dense and impressive- not what i was expecting at all. By 11 o clock we began to rise out of the clouds and the vegetation changed into more longer grasses. The ascent was helped by a good clear path with lots and lots of steps. As we continued to climb, the views were amazing. We were above a blanket of cloud with views of the snowcapped peak of Kilimanjaro. We arrived at the second camp - Saddle Hut (3500m) at 12:20. Everyone tucked into our lunchboxes and we all tried
This Morning we had a n early start as breakfast was ready for 6:00am, once again the fried eggs were not amazing and service was at its usual African Speed. We left the YMCA at 7:30am and made our way to Arusha National Park, we arrived at the park gates at 9:00am, after passing through the gates we straight away saw Giraffe which were loudly pointed out by zoe. Further into the park we saw Zebra, Buffalow and monkeys. We arrived at the foot of Mt Meru at 10:30am some of the group then took advantage of the last chance to by chocolate. We then began our accent of of Meru at 11:30 am. the treck began through jungle and open plains, as we climbed higher the views we were hopeing to see were sadly covered by cloud and mist, we even had our first spot of rain. When tracking through the jungle we saw more monkeys. we arrived at the camp at 3:00pm which we were supprised to find was a small set of cabins a dinning hall and even sh
we all had abit of a lie-in today at the YMCA in Moshi, and all woke up around half 8, as we did the breakfast in two sittings to the ease the load on the kitchen , as yesterday breakfast took ages to come out. Hannah had a lovely egg for her breakfast, it was a fried egg apart from the fact that the yolk was seperate from the white, and it looked like a huge white head. After breakfast we had a quick meeting with Hitler (Zoe) about the plans for safari and also about down jackets, from K-Pap. After the meeting we got feried down to the "Ahsante Tours" headquarters to have a meeting with Methly Swai about the Meru Trek, which begins Tomorrow. after the meeting with Methly we split into groups some went to the internet cafe and others went out to buy gifts. Later that night we set off for the resturant Indioitaliano which eveyone enjoyed. We then arrived back at the YMCA at 9:30 to find there were probelms with the laundry as some items had been

Like yesterday most people were woken up by trhe church bells. We had a meeting in one of the school classrooms for poridge and then started work at 8:30am. It was quite shocking to us that students were being hit by teachers. We made huge progress on the classroom and the dining room. Becky is painting a jungle scene on the back wall and everyone is helping with the grass and alphabet and numbers to aid the development of the school. One third of the floor of the dining room has been covered with rocks and the sheer amount of soil that has been shifted is amazing. The group outside had a nasty surpirse when they found a black snake underneath the rocks. We then had a welcome session with the 309 pupils of the school, to introduce ourselves to everyone. They sang songs to us including 'if you're happy and you know it'! We continued to work until dinner was ready at about 6:00pm, again it was gorgeous! We are now having a team meeting and planning tomorrow.

Work was intensive today and included a lot of cement and big dirty buckets! lol. Hardcore on the floor was completed in the first 1/3 and the lintels on the building were started.
Painting progressed; the back wall got some more grass, a tree, a monkey, the de Ferrers logo and the world challenge logo were paintied as well as the numbers being finished. Also two maps, one of Africa and one of Tanzania were painted.
LUNCH WAS CHIP SARNIES!!! Lol and everyone loved them! There were also lots of buscuits and oranged!! Before tea the elite of Tanzanis 2010 team played the locals at football. Unfortunatly we lots 7-5 :(!
Dinner or tea as some of the team debate was beef stew and rice - again lovely, followed by a dessert! Yes a dessert! Crappy, soft, digestives, but still nice!
(Food was in no short supply thanks to Matt's leadership (Legend!!)

It's night now and everyone is in their tents after a very long and emotional day. After spending a night in Moshi at the YMCA, the team departed for the next stage of the expedition. We start the project phase in the morning, which everyone is very excited avout- we are ready for the challenge! This morning we had the first lie in of the trip and hten had a meeting with our in country agent Methley Swai. It was clear that the project at the school was the main priority of the group and the entire expedition.
After a relatively short journey to the school it was obvious we were in the very rural areas of Africa. The state of the school shocked everyone. Today was the first day of tensions in the group but after an emotional team meeting the bond between the group was corrected, ready to start the most important and fullfilling phase of the expedition. We will be working on completing the floor of the dining room and painting a classroom.
Monday 26th July 2010
As warned we were all woken up by the church bells at 5:00 am! Apart from a few lucky people that somehow slept through them! The tensions and emotions of the day before were all forgotten and we all woke up with a positive attitude and enthusiasm towards the project week ahead. We started work at 8:30am and split the group into a number of teams. One group were working on the dinning room floor, another designing the classroom, another getting the weekly shopping and others supervising deliveries!
We all made great progess throughout the day and worked really hard. The tuna and cheese sandwhiches for lunch were a great change from the usual Jam or peanut butter. After lunch we got back to work and had a fun afternoon with the buckets of soil! I don't think anyone knew they could laugh so much over a bucket of soil! We also found some lizards and toads under some of the rocks and some jumping spider type things which were
Most of us slept through teh church bells again this morning - our last day on the project. Everyone was ready to be working nice and early to make the most of our last few hours. the usual chains were set up to get soil in the dining room floor, whch pretty much has a complete covering of soil. 2/3 covered with rocks, and the beginning of the cncreting. The final additions to the classroom were made, with everyone painting their footpringts on the wall, with "take only memories, leave only footprints" written next to them. The classroom is looking absolutely amazing, especially comparing it to how it was before. At midday, we had a meeting with all the teachers, where we all introduced ourselves to each other. The headmaster gave a speach tto thank us all. We were given a buffet of sandwiches, peanuts, fruit and coffee to say thankyou. We then went into the classroom to present the children with our gifts. short journey back to the YMCA and
23rd July, Friday
- Our second acclimatisation day, decided to walk for 8 hours.
- Managed to get ready for half 8, ate porriage (only bearable using sugar), iodized our water, and headed across the plain.
- We saw monkeys during the walk. They had black faces, white fur on the head and a cream body.
- We passed A LOT of villages/groups of mud huts with people watching outside. Some people cycled passed others were hurding cattle.
- Had lunch at 3000m after 10km of walking in 3/4 hours. Gave some of our sandwiches to the children looking after their cattle.
- We descended down a very dusty path, which covered us to create a lovely brown tan... We also met and shook hands with some school children carrying water bottles on their heads.
- At the campsite we washed in 'puddles' of water in buckets or face wipes. The record was 12 face wipes by Luisa.
We then played the dice game 'perudo' and had minestrone soup (BEAUTIFUL), rice + 'b
We all woke up around 7am. Zoe, Ellie and Louise cooked the porridge for everyone's breakfast, everyone appriciated the sugar available to add some taste to the blanbd taste of the porridge.
The guides arrived at 8.30am to take us on our first walk of the trip. As per usual we were not ready and it took us another hour before we were all washed and packed up and ready to go.Everyone had taken their malaria tablets and were ready to get out into the fresh air after spending the best part of 3 days on a plane and bus, it felt good to get out into the countryside and look at all the amazing views that there were. We walked from 9.30 till 1.30 and everyone managed to get through the ordeal without any major injuries apart from blisters.
It was very hot and lots of suncream was applied to stop us from burning.
A family of massai people came to sell us jewellery and it was all so beautiful so most of us brought a few items.
Everyone is sat around finishing off lunch of bread with either peanut butter or jam.
So far today we woke up about 8am at the YMCA hostel in a nice comfy bed. We actualy got to have nice warm showers as well! such a treat after so much travelling on dusty roads! Some of the group went off to get breakfast but before the got back the rest of us realised that breakfast was included in the price of the room. We got a choice of scrambled egg, fried egg or an omlette with toast and some melon, it was greatly appriciated by all!
After breakfast we met our in country agent Methley and discussed the itinery for the acclimatisation phase, here we decided roles for the day.
I went with some others to exchange money, we walked through the streets where all the locals came up to us asking where we were from and what we were doing we spoke to them but had to be carful that they werent just trying to con us or steal our belongings. when we got th

Just got off the plane in Kenya. Everyone is shattered but we've just got on the 'bus' (which is so small) and now we have eight hours to sleep and chill out, although its hard as the roads are extremely rough. At the airport, it was so scary because a few men swamped aroun dus and started offering to carry our bags for us which was strange because, after they started asking for tips. it's going to be so hard saying no to people who ask for things.
Anyway I'm going for now Zoe.

just crossed the Tanzania border with no hassle. it was meant to take us 2 hours and it took us about 2 minutes. Really good. Before that we stopped off at a 'service station' (Kenya style) for some food where all the lads watched a goat being slaughtered. we then ate a huge meal for $3 which was quite nice. it was GOAT!! salad, rice and loads of other random bits and bo
First day,
People started to arrive at school at around about 9 after saying their good byes to family and friends. At school there was a bit of a rush around as miss roberts told me, adam, hannah and matt that we needed to get extra passport photos and to fetch them. After sorting out all the information, including personnal medication, we were ready to set off. However Zoe surprised me with baking me a birthday cake. We set off from school just after 1. After a smooth journey and one stop at oxford service station we arrived at the airport just after 4. With a quick self check in, there was a long wait until we could go through the security check. The departure lounge was very comfortable with many different types of shops to occupy ourselves with, while waiting for the boarding call. We started to board at about 7:45 and after secondary passport checks we boar
