Top Designers in Year 8

Year 8 Design & Technology students demonstrated their excellent Design skills when the College took part in an IET  Faraday Challenge Day on Tuesday, run by Mary Southall and Kevin Jones from Attainment Partnership.

36 students brushed up their Design and Technology, Science and Maths skills to design, develop and manufacture a mechanical device that could simulate a robotic arm. The students were marked throughout the day at every stage of development.

On the day, team two comprised of Jonathan, Liam, Danielle, Lucy, Natalie and Scott just beat the runners up by 4 points with a superb 160/200. A great fun day for everyone involved.

1st Annual Science Lecture

June 22nd, 2010

Monday 21st June 2010 saw the first de Ferrers annual Science lecture.

In keeping with this year’s theme, Breaking the Boundaries, we were delighted to have Dr David Evans, who works at CERN and the University of Birmingham Particle Physics group, as our guest speaker.  David was joined by our own Mr Griffiths to talk about particle physics and the search for the smallest structures in the Universe.

Dr Evans and Mr Long experiment with liquid nitrogen

The audience were treated to some great demonstrations involving superconducting magnets and liquid nitrogen.

You can find out a bit more about Dr Evans’ work at CERN here:
